The University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice is a public university founded in 1991. It comprises eight faculties and a university institute, namely the Pedagogical Faculty, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Health and Social Studies and the newly founded Faculty of Fishery and Water Protection. The ninth body of the university is the Institute of Physical Biology in Nové Hrady. We are a research university focusing mainly on natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Recent surveys have shown the university to be most successful in science and research, lifelong learning, and its ability to focus on regional issues.
Applicants for the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees may choose from 229 majors with a range of further specializations. The study of 24 majors is conducted in English and 3 in German.
All faculties and institutes provide PhD study programmes in chosen fields of study and the majority of them have the right to name professors and associate professors.
In the academic year 2009/10 there are 13 000 students studying at the University of South Bohemia. Yearly there are four times more applications than places at the university.
The university provides a wide range of lifelong learning programmes at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels as well as complementary, requalification, and other types of adult education. Lifelong learning comprises the University of the Third Age, the further education of the academic and non-academic staff, and summer schools. Courses are taken in full-time, distant, or combined forms.
The Pedagogical Faculty educates mostly future nursery, primary and secondary school teachers in all the appropriate teaching subjects, including mathematics in various combinations. At the same time, a large part of the students study non-teaching Bachelor’s programmes such as Education in Nature and the Environment, Foreign Languages for European and International Trade, Financial Mathematics, Sports Studies, and Geography for Public Administration. The faculty provides two Doctoral study programmes, namely Pedagogical Psychology, and Information and Communication Technologies in Education.
The University Campus is located in Čtyři Dvory, České Budějovice in a quiet part of town next to the park. It seats the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Philosophy, the Rectorate, an assembly hall, dormitories, and a cafeteria. The dormitories hold 2300 places. Almost all rooms (mostly double rooms) are connected to the academic computer network and the Internet. The modern cafeteria is located on the university campus and also has several branches in the town to cater for students with lectures there. Sports facilities include gyms, an athletic stadium, and basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts. The Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Health and Social Studies, and the Pedagogical Faculty are located largely in the historical centre of the town.
