Ioannis Holfeld, author of the book, was born in 1747 or 1750, probably in Bohemia, entered the Society of Jesus and studied and then taught at the College of St. Clement in Prague. The last third of his life he probably spent as a professor of mathematics at the University of Lviv, where he died in 1814.
