Beginning with the 2026/27 academic year, teacher education programs in Austria will be restructured into a three-year bachelor’s program followed by a two-year master’s program. Within this framework, all students are required to select two teaching subjects alongside a comprehensive component in educational sciences.
This presentation outlines the overall structure of the new curriculum, with particular emphasis on the integration of (descriptive) geometry within the mathematics teacher education program. It will detail the content and learning objectives of the geometry courses, provide insight into selected instructional materials, and discuss corresponding teaching methodologies.
Recognizing that the strength of university-level geometry education is closely linked to prior exposure in schools, the talk will also examine the revised Austrian school curriculum, with a specific focus on subjects that incorporate descriptive geometric content.
Finally, the presentation will highlight additional geometry-focused initiatives that enable university students to engage with the subject beyond the classroom. These initiatives not only enrich their studies but also serve to inspire school students by fostering early awareness of both the appeal of geometry and the prospect of pursuing a career in mathematics education.
